RE: Setting up a truck

I have a 30 foot 5th wheel in my sig that the dealer said I should be fine towing with my 1/2 ton. While it did tow it the truck screamed pulling hills and I could never get comfortable with the combination as I always had to anticipate every little hill or stop. After several trips I upgraded to a 3/4 ton and could not be happier. This truck can handle the hills without screaming and the stopping seems better as well.
A 5.5 bed would also be a concern. I have a 6.5 bed and have to watch some of my turns particularly when backing.
Someone with a lot more experience could probably work with my original combination but I just never could be comfortable. It got to the point that I did not want to take the trailer out because I did not look forward to the drive. With the new truck I have no concerns and look for chances to hit the road.

RE: Bunk models

My Flagstaff has the wide bunks in it. Close to twin width. It was one of the features that "sold" the unit as my daughters are older (21 and 16).
Most websites that have floor plans will provide the dimensions of the beds. You might check those out to give you a "short list" of units to consider.

RE: First Long Trip

We will be traveling with our 3 kids, 10, 8 and 7. We plan to leave on a Friday and will be checking in in Florida on Sunday. Ideally I would like to make it to South of the Border by Friday night. Stay there on Friday. Leave SOB Saturday morning and be in ST. Augustine by late afternoon. So that one Sunday we will have roughly a 2 hour Drive. Hubby would be content to sleep in Wal-Mart parking lots along the way.
After having spent the day in the backseat I do not think that the kids will be very happy sleeping at Wal-Mart. I would advise looking for a campground with at least a pool and small playground.

RE: Dometic frig question

Thanks for all of the feedback!
I verified on the Dometic website that my unit is one of the recalled units. I have an appointment to take it in next week to the service facility that I always use. They happen to an approved service location.
I will let them apply the fix and make sure that everything is in order.
Once again thanks for all of the help!

RE: Dometic frig question

I have checked the temp and it is around 43 to 45 degrees regardless if I am on gas or electric. This morning I am going to check the vents to make sure there is no obstruction and although I popped the outside panel before I will again check everything behind it again.
I purchased my trailer used and there was no manual for the frig. Does anyone know exactly what the check light indicates?

RE: Truck charges trailer batteries when hooked up??

I see in your sig that you have a chevy. You need to make sure that the fuse has been installed in the fuse block under the hood. It seems that not all trucks are shipped with this fuse in place. Must be GM's way of saving a few bucks. My 2500 did not have it in place.

Dometic frig question

I have a Dometic model RM2652 in the unit listed in my sig. I used it all last week but the "check" light never went off. The frig seemed to work just fine but the check light remained on. I switched from auto to gas with no change.
Does anyone have thoughts on what I should look at?
Thanks!

RE: Converting tail lights to LED tail lights

I am the OP to this thread. I did replace my taillights with LED lights. The reason I did it was the original lights were never maintained by the original owner. They would sometimes work and sometimes not. When working they were very dim.
Since I was replacing not just a bulb but the whole assembly I elected to use the LEDS. I use them on a jet ski trailer and have never had any problems.
I did not do it for the "Bling" that others here claim or as part of a fad. I did it for reliability and safety. I purchased the lights on Ebay and installed them myself. The cost for the lights was around $50 this includes the pair of lights with a license plate light. I spent another $10 or so on Plexiglas to cover the old opening and wire crimps etc.
I am very pleased with the outcome. After winter storage they worked the very first time and are extremely bright.

RE: Dumb things we do

Well I remembered to lower the antenna but forgot to rotate it first to lay on the roof. It only stuck out a little over two feet from the side.
Fortunately DD noticed before it made any contact with anything substantial.

RE: Willow Tree Resort

We spent two weeks there last July and had a fabulous time! All staff were very friendly and courteous and by far the largest sites of any campground we stayed at.
By using highway 31 you can quickly get to any MB attraction by taking the correct exit.
We are making plans to return this summer!

RE: LED TAILLIGHTS

I have a 2004 Forest River Flagstaff 5th wheel. The rear lights were in three parts. The light housing which is attached to the trailer,a bulb plate the attached to the light housing with 4 screws, and a red lens that pop'ed on to the bulb plate. The bulb plate was not a solid piece of plastic.
The red lens pops off and the bulb was mounted to a plastic plate. I removed the bulb plate (4 screws) and cut away the bulb socket. I then cut a piece of Plexiglas to fit over the bulb plate. The Plexiglas was glued to the bulb plate and then painted white to match the rest of the light housing. Holes were drilled in the Plexiglas to match the mounting screws in the bulb plate.
I then ordered LED light housings with 1/4 mounting inch studs on eBAY. The Plexiglas was drilled to match the studs and to allow the wires to pass behind the Plexiglas the lights were then mounted to the Plexiglas and then attached to the trailer.
The link below is my purchase on eBAY. The gentlemen who runs this business was very helpful and answered my email questions. He even offered to find a suitable replacement if I sent him pictures of my existing lights. I figured out my own solution so I did not need to take him up on his offer.

My trailer is in storage or I would send you pictures.

RE: mirror extensions

I use the Cipa slip on mirrors that match my truck mirrors. I purchased them at Camping World and have been very pleased with them.
Here is a link:
Cipa Mirrors
I purchased at the CW store and they let me take a set out to my truck and try them out before I purchased.

If you Google RV checklists you will find several checklists that are free.
I located this one and it has checklists for supplies, departure, arrival etc.

RE: Passengers in Moving 5th Wheel

Never!
I was a paramedic that had to move around in the back of a moving ambulance. I can tell you that this caused multiple injuries from cuts and lacerations to one co worker with a broken ankle. Keep in mind that we could see and hear what was happening. In a 5th wheel the people riding in it never will get a warning in time to brace themselves. In addition, in the unlikely event of a accident, I would feel sorry for anyone in the trailer as I do not believe that the structure is strong enough to afford any real protection.

RE: truck recovery gone wrong...

Don't know if this was the final straw or not but that trucking company was located within 5 miles or so from my house. They went out of business several years ago!

RE: pop-up, tent campers, folding campers, camper trailer

One factor to consider is the softsides of a PUP and the two boxers!
Will you be able to leave them inside while you run to the bath house?
I have four dogs and I can guarantee you the my wife's would chew his way through the side to get out when left alone.
There are many alternatives to a softside unit. The Jayco KIWI with the slideout bed provides hardsides, bathroom, and air and heat.
Just a reminder to consider the dogs!
Good luck and have fun with whatever option you decide.

RE: Best Myrtle Beach Campground Beach

My vacation plans changed and I called Myrtle Beach Travel Park yesterday to check on availability. The lady told me they were booked solid June through August. I could call back closer to my travel dates to see if there were any cancellations.
Looks like we will go to Willowtree as we do not care for the activity at Ocean Lakes, Pirateland etc.
Whatever campground you choose I would advise making reservations as soon as possible.
Good Luck and enjoy the beach!

RE: Vacation plans haved changed Need help making new

Thanks for all the input!
Deep Creek Lake is out because we actually had a mobile home there in a combination mobile home / campground park for over 15 years! The owner passed away and the kids sold the property to develop very high end homes. I think that if we went back it would only open old wounds.
After discussing with the family I believe that we will probably head to Myrtle Beach and stay at either Willowtree or Myrtle Beach Travel Park depending on availability. I just need to check that the week of June 9th does not have a group event that will crowd out the area such as bike week etc.
Thanks again for all your help!

Vacation plans haved changed Need help making new

The family and I had planned on two weeks off in July. The first week at the Outer Banks and the second at Myrtle Beach. Now both me and oldest daughter have new jobs and youngest has a band camp. The only time that we can all get away together is the week of June 7th through the 14th.
We live 20 miles south of Pittsburgh at the I79 I70 Junction in Washington PA. I prefer the beach but this early in the season and having only one week I am not sure if I can get far enough south to have warm temps and water at this time of the year.
I am looking for ideas that would fill a week and hopefully a days drive (8 - 10 hours approximately) from home.
My family consists of me DW and two daughters age 21 and 16. We will also be traveling with some dogs.
Any advice would be appreciated both destinations and campgrounds!
Thanks Dave!
